Elephants

George W. Hart

We just finished building a sculpture I call Elephants, at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA.

It consists of two 45-inch diameter, mirror-image orbs, symmetrically installed in the Morse building.
They hang from the ceiling on cables, so can turn gently in the breeze.

Several classes came during the day, each participating for a while in the construction.

Each orb consists of sixty laser-cut wood parts joined with small cable ties.
We began by making two-part modules, then joined the modules together.

There are many subtle things to get exactly right in making the many connections.
Guiding the cable ties through all the tiny holes takes longer than you might think.

The part shape looks something like an abstract elephant with a long trunk, so I named it Elephants.
(But looking at the two orbs together, an alternate name for the sculpture could be Elephant Balls.)

We started at 8:00 in the morning, finished the assembly at 1:00, and had both orbs installed by 2:00

I'm very happy with the result.

Thank you to everyone who participated, especially to Joel Jacob who arranged everything,
to Roxy and Don Barry who hosted me, and to Neil Evans who took the photos of us working.
