This twelve inch sculpture is
assembled from twenty identical pieces of laser-cut plywood.
The above template shows the shape of each component.
This computer-generated
visualization helps make clear how complex the interdigitation is.
Trust me, it is very difficult to assemble this!
You can try cutting out twenty copies of the above template and tape
them together at the tips.
If you have it assembled correctly, each piece of paper lies flat in
its own plane.
I have also made nylon versions of this design using
solid freeform fabrication.
Above are several small (1-inch diameter) ones that I dyed various
colors.
These were my
Gathering for
Gardner gift exchange items in 2004.
A larger (2-inch diameter) nylon version is shown
here.
